Expected price estimated to be up to $650.000. As you might recall from the Geneva Motor Show the plug-in hybrid concept used a 500 hp gas V8 engine and a pair of 109 hp electric motors. A lithium ion battery that was good for 16 miles of  zero emissions grid driving or 78 miles per gallon. We shall see what the production model brings.

Green Light for Series Development of the 918 Spyder

Stuttgart. In its session today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the green light for series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder. Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the Concept Study, the Supervisory Board gave Porsche’s Board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the car already presented. This concept version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting the headlines worldwide.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG: “Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.”

The Concept Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, corresponding to fuel consumption of 3.0 litre/100 km (94.1 mpg imp) in the NEDC, on the one hand, and the performance of a super-sports car, on the other. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology then forms a symbiosis in the 918 Spyder with truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements. Further product details of the 918 Spyder will be disclosed in the months to come.

Just days ago, the Bugatti Super Sport rocketed past the SSC Ultimate Aero TT to claim the prestigious award of the fastest production car in the world. SSC (Shelby Supercars) didn’t take long to  congratulate Bugatti and to also give fair warning of a future title battle. Before the new Bugatti record, the Aero TT held the title with a 256-mph run, and it seems SSC is intent on making Bugatti’s new record very short-lived.

In a statement, the company said: “We’ve been working on a new project to debut before the end of the summer. Not much can be said at this time except that we’ll be upping the ante on all fronts.  Having famed American designer Jason Castriota as our lead design enables SSC to reflect its engineer and performance in its aesthetics. It’s impossible for us to be more thrilled about having him on board and we’re anxious to show the world what we have up our sleeve.”

Not exactly confirmation of a car capable of beating the Super Sport’s 268 mph run, but given the context, we’re hoping that’s exactly what they’re up to. As of this posting, they hadn’t yet taken the “World’s Fastest Production Car” title off their website. Come on SSC, you lost fair and square.

As a modern re-interpretation of the 300SL, it’s also a return to the fast and elegant Mercedes of old. This car not only looks good, but it packs a ton of horsepower and performance to back the claims being made that it’s a true super-car. Heavily modified over the standard AMG V8, this 6.3 breathes much freer thanks to an all-new intake system, more aggressive valve timing, tubular steel headers and a de-throttled exhaust. In addition to the 571 HP at 6,800 RPM, it now develops 479 Lb-Ft of torque at 4,750 RPM, delivering high-RPM power with low-RPM torque. The 6.0 liter monster outputs 750 horsepower, enough to take the car to 60 mph in less than 2.7 seconds on race tires, among the fastest acceleration of anything on four wheels, anywhere. The exhaust note is  phenomenal and the sound going down the straight at the Nurburgring is second to none. Also, the non painted carbon fiber body is absolutely gorgeous. This is one hell of a race-ready exotic and it better be for 1.7 million. The new race ready Pagani Zonda R, it’s worth every cent.
