Bernie Ecclestone has used his website to announce that a US GP will be held in Austin, Texas from 2012 to 2021. It will be the first F1 event held in the state since the one-off race at Dallas in 1984. The Austin event will be promoted by Full Throttle Productions, a company with an involvement in NASCAR. A new facility will be built for the race on 900 acres of Texan land and will host a bevy of race events throughout the years.
Aston Martin’s highly anticipated model — the Rapide — is finally here. The Rapide will list from $199,950 in the United States, and will become the British luxury sportscar maker’s only four-door model.
The Rapide will compete with vehicles like the Porsche Panamera, Audi A7 and the Mercedes CLS to name a few. But the Aston will likely be one of the most expensive and exclusive luxury sports sedans on the market, with standard features that include a Bang & Olufsen Beosound audio system, heated memory seats and Aston Martin’s Adaptive Damping Sytem. The Rapide features a hand-built 6.0-liter V12 engine producing 470 horsepower with peak power being delivered at 6,000 rpm and 443 pound-feet of peak torque at 5,000 rpm. A specifically tuned six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission allows the driver to change gears automatically or manually via the steering column-mounted magnesium paddles.
Breaking news from Porsche, 918 spyder to go into production. Expected price estimated to be up to $650.000. As you might recall from the Geneva Motor Show the plug-in hybrid concept used a 500 hp gas V8 engine and a pair of 109 hp electric motors. A lithium ion battery that was good for 16 miles of zero emissions grid driving or 78 miles per gallon. We shall see what the production model brings.
Just days ago, the Bugatti Super Sport rocketed past the SSC Ultimate Aero TT to claim the prestigious award of the fastest production car in the world. SSC (Shelby Supercars) didn’t take long to congratulate Bugatti and to also give fair warning of a future title battle. Before the new Bugatti record, the Aero TT held the title with a 256-mph run, and it seems SSC is intent on making Bugatti’s new record very short-lived.
Update: Brock Lesnar’s next fight has become official. He’ll be taking on Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 on October 23, 2010, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Ca.
Jaguar F-Type confirmed?
Now that Jaguar is safely secured under the financial blanket of Tata Motors, the automaker is becoming more ambitious in its efforts to expand its model range. Tata has promised a yearly investment of $1 billion for the next five years, which means Jaguar will have the funding it needs to get new products cranked out. In an interview earlier this week, Jaguar Land Rover boss Carl-Peter Forster has reportedly confirmed that a few new models are in the pipeline, including the F-Type sports car, which we saw in concept form back in 2000.
Audi has done it again everybody, they’ve brought us another phenomenal automobile, the new R8 Spyder.
In turning the R8 into a convertible, Audi needed to make a few changes—the designers didn’t want to lose the R8’s unique styling, while the engineers were charged with retaining the coupe’s rigid chassis.
Landspeed worldrecord with the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport
The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport takes production sports cars to a whole new dimension Wolfsburg/Molsheim, July 4, 2010 – on a beautiful sunny day at 25 degrees the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport achieved a new landspeed world record for production cars, on the proving grounds of the Volkswagen Group at Ehra-Lessien (nearby its headquarters at Wolfsburg). In the presence of the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) and a representative of Guinness Book of Records the Super Sport achieved an average top speed of 431 km/h.
After a spectacular card filled with fights that drew fans in the sellout crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena out of their seats repeatedly, Shane Carwin seemed set to close the show in a major way. The interim Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion rocked champion Brock Lesnar with a crushing left hook early in the first round of their title unification bout and spent the rest of the round pounding on him relentlessly. Lesnar was pummeled like never before, but he managed to survive the round, and Carwin wasn’t able to do the same in the second. Lesnar took Carwin down early in the second, gained great position and slapped an arm triangle choke on Carwin. Carwin (12-1) was never able to move Lesnar and he was forced to tap at 2:19. “I stand before you a humble champion and I’m still the toughest S.O.B. around, baby,” Lesnar said. Lesnar (5-1) was taking huge shots on the ground, but he said he knew Carwin was tiring and that if he could hang in there, he would be all right. “I knew he was getting tired,” Lesnar said. “Each shot was less dramatic than the other.”
Saturday the 16th was a day I never thought would come, the day Fedor Emelianenko was beaten!!! Fedor lost by submission in 1:09 of the first round, thanks to Fabricio Werdum. Fedor had held a record of 31-1, the one loss due to a cut above the eye, which he later revenged. Fedor’s loss can actually be good for MMA and Fedor. He obviously is overweight and he hasn’t recently shown the speed of attack that separated him from the rest in the past. He might come into his next fight in better shape. He also was the best because Fedor would spend some time during a fight in his opponents’ skill strength, and still win. He punched it out with Kazuyuki Fujita standup, grounded-and-pounded with Nogueira, wrestled with Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman, kicked with Cro Cop, etc. He obviously went too far with Werdum, leaving his head down and arms extended in Werdum’s guard. Fedor might want to do what Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva do, stay away from your opponent’s strengths and dominate on your terms. It’s not as challenging, but far less risky.
Saturday night’s Strikeforce event in San Jose saw one MMA legend fall (Fedor Emelianenko), while another announced that he was hanging up the gloves for good after a career that spanned 15 years and a record of 23 – 10 – 2. At 37 years old, an emotional Frank Shamrock declared that his time as a fighter had reached its end. “I’m 37 years old now, and my time has come,” he said Saturday. “The stars like Gilbert Melendez and Cristiane ‘Cyborg,’ they’re the future and I am the past. Tonight I announce my retirement. This will be the last time I walk into this cage as a fighter. It was an honor to bleed for you,” he said, “to break my bones for you and to entertain you.” Frank explained in an interview earlier this week that since his fight with Nick Diaz over a year ago, he hasn’t been the same.
Frank Shamrock: It was just my body and the time. I put the machine back in the shop and ramped it up and it just didn’t perform. The last time in my fight with Nick – it used to be that it didn’t matter how hurt I was going into a fight, I always performed. When I fought Nick I didn’t perform. I had injuries that wouldn’t allow me to play my game and to entertain. So I knew when I tried to put my body to work again, it’s done. The machine’s down. I just can’t race it any more.
EvilStar would like to thank Frank for years of incredible fights and wish him luck in life and all his future endeavors.
The 2011 Mercedes SLS AMG is the first independent design from AMG and the new flagship for the entire company. As a modern re-interpretation of the 300SL, it’s also a return to the fast and elegant Mercedes of old. This car not only looks good, but it packs a ton of horsepower and performance to back the claims being made that it’s a true super-car. Heavily modified over the standard AMG V8, this 6.3 breathes much freer thanks to an all-new intake system, more aggressive valve timing, tubular steel headers and a de-throttled exhaust. In addition to the 571 HP at 6,800 RPM, it now develops 479 Lb-Ft of torque at 4,750 RPM, delivering high-RPM power with low-RPM torque. This all contributes to a reported 3.8-second 0-to-60 MPH time, and a top speed of 197 MPH. Paired to to the heart of this AMG monster is a duel clutch, 7 speed, paddle shifting transmission that makes lightning fast shifts at an astonishing 100 milli-seconds. So, not only does this car pack a punch, it’s equally gorgeous. The lines of the body are beautiful and the cockpit is a work of art. Leave it to AMG to combine brute force with absolute luxury. Ladies and gentleman, introducing the 2011 Mercedes SLS AMG, a definite blast from the past.
There’s a lot to love about the new Pagani Zonda R, starting with the Mercedes/AMG V12 bolted directly onto the rear of the chassis. The 6.0 liter monster outputs 750 horsepower, enough to take the car to 60 mph in less than 2.7 seconds on race tires, among the fastest acceleration of anything on four wheels, anywhere. The exhaust note is phenomenal and the sound going down the straight at the Nurburgring is second to none. Also, the non painted carbon fiber body is absolutely gorgeous. This is one hell of a race-ready exotic and it better be for 1.7 million. The new race ready Pagani Zonda R, it’s worth every cent.
